We tracked six songs at with Dustin in late 2009. Don't be misled by the unassuming building facade. Having recorded everywhere from full-on professional studios in Hollywood to my own basement, I can say with some degree of authority that The Formulation Room provides a great environment to be creative, and that Dustin knows how to create superior recordings.The Formulation Room is a comfortable, modern, well equipped recording studio. Dustin is a very efficient, knowledgeable, well-rounded engineer and musician who is one of the hardest workers I have come across in this industry. His keen ears and knowledge of song structure, dynamics, and chord changes was remarkable. Simply put, Dustin really knows 'what sounds right' in a song.
But Dustin's greatest asset is his personality. He did a fantastic job of making us feel at home and treating us like guests. Several of our band's members had not recorded before, and Dustin's ability to work with everyone and their respective skill levels allowed him to extract from us recordings that were greater than the sum of our band's parts.

We worked with Dustin on our demo CD. It was a really enjoyable experience and the final product was excellent. Dustin spent a solid ten hours with us and made us feel right at home. The atmosphere at the Formulation Room was relaxed, casual and comfortable, but Dustin was working fast and furious the whole day. We especially appreciated his experience and his EARS. He made lots of great suggestions along the way that made the demo sound great, but he was not overbearing or heavy handed. Once we were completely done tracking all of the songs, we left the project in Dustin's capable hands. He produced the montage on his own, carefully selecting great snippets from each song and artfully melding them together. We can't imagine having a better experience in the recording studio or getting a better value for our money. We'll definitely go back to the Formulation Room and we would recommend it to anyone.

We first heard about The Formulation Room from a friend of ours at our practice space. We had three studios to choose from, in which we felt would be the best fit for our music. To make a long story short, after our 1 hour consultation with Dustin, we had made up our minds. You couldn’t ask for a better Engineer! Dustin has a HUGE passion for what he does and takes incredible pride in your project.
For the 2 weeks we spent in The Formulation Room recording our 5 track EP we felt like a little family. Dustin makes you feel right at home, you don’t feel rushed or pressured at all; it is easy going. A lot of the studios in Sacramento start the clock as soon as you walk in the door and seem to even charge for the air you breathe. Dustin works really well with bands! He understands what its like to be in a band working on a budget, so the prices are fair! His attitude is AWESOME and the Vibe of the whole studio is incredible. Dustin worked insanely hard to make our project sound like exactly what we wanted!
In the end we received an AMAZING EP, the sound is HUGE! We can’t see ourselves recording with any other engineer at any other studio… the little adjustments he made are our favorite parts of our music. Without him, the sound of our EP would not be as "balls out" as it is now! In conclusion, If you are like us and having a hard time deciding on where to record, to the point where you are reading this testimonial.. Look no further! The Formulation Room is the best in the city, no matter what type of project you are doing. Our time spent with Dustin at The Formulation Room was nothing but STELLAR! We love you D-Dog! Working with David and the Formulation Room was a pleasure for me and my wife.
David was very professional and really took the time to get to know the artist, in this case my wife.
We had recorded and produced our song with a different producer prior to meeting David, and the finished product, that David gave us, was 100% better in half the time. His work gave our project credibility as a professional and made a huge impact on our success. We will be using David on future projects for many years to come.

Hey this is Ryan from The Ruin
We worked with Dustin on both our demo CD as well as our 3 song EP. We were stoked on the results of both! Dustin is not only professional, but super cool too. He took the time to get to know us, and to understand our music and the way we want to portray ourselves. He is definitely the whole studio in one man. He's got the tech stuff handled with super efficiency so you don't feel like you're wasting hours just "setting up." And when it comes to production and editing he offers advice and experience that is priceless.
We checked around Sac for studios, and yes Sac does have some nationally recognized recording studios, and we found ourselves right back in The Formulation Room. Other places we talked to gave off that vibe that they knew our music better than we did, but Dustin makes you feel comfortable and relaxed so you feel confident that the results that come out will be your vision.
When it comes time to do our full length album you can bet your ass we're doing it at the Formulation Room! If you're thinking about recording your project, do it at TFR, you won't regret it!

Don’t let The Formulation Room’s affordable rates fool you. Dustin has professional equipment, experience, and attitude. If you are on a budget, he is more than just a sound engineer. He has great ears and makes sure you sound your best no matter what type of music you play. If you find yourself stuck on a passage or song, he can offer suggestions without changing your sound. We traveled two hours each way to record with Dustin and it was time well spent.

When it came time for our band to record a demo, we shopped around and decided on The Formulation Room. Our engineer was David Marler, who took the time to give us a tour of the studio and answered all of our questions about the recording process. David was very professional and patient with the band, and afterward he did a fantastic job of mixing the music and making us sound our best. In fact, since that point we've been doing our best to get our live performance up to par with the CD and having it as a benchmark has driven us harder than we thought possible.
As a band we hardly ever agree on what direction we want to move in and you have to make sacrifices - the one thing we all agree on is that when we go back to the studio, it'll be to The Formulation Room.
