The Formulation Room

Our Facility: Studio A & Studio B

The Formulation Room began as a small concept/project recording studio in 2004 in Rancho Cordova; it has gone through a few transformations but our philosophy still remains. In our new location off Otto Circle in Sacramento, we've expanded into 2 studios: Studio A & Studio B.

Our Engineers:

--Dustin Ryan

The Formulation Room Founder...Dustin Ryan has been a recording engineer for over 9 years. Starting out as a high school passion, Dustin spent time interning at Sound Lab under Justin Dehart. In college, he then enrolled in Sacramento City College's recording program. Before long, Dustin started purchasing his own recording equipment.

Dustin spent a few years recording his own musical projects and frequenting local "open mic" nights, to find local artists looking for recordings of their original work. Although recording and engineering was still a large part of Dustin's focus, most of Dustin's time was divided up between his own band rehersal, recording his bands albums, and his regular day job. Dustin decided in late 2005 to step back from his routine to make his passion--engineering--his full time project. Wanting to take his recording knowlage to the next level, Dustin began another Internship; this time at J Street Recorders. He gained invaluble knowlage working under Brian Wheat and Michael Rosen, on the Neve 8108 console.

You can find Dustin toiling away the hours at The Formulation Room, or working as a freelance engineer at J Street Recorders in Downtown Sacramento (ask about rates for tracking part of your project at J Street with Dustin and finishing the rest here ), and occasionally you'll find him at the sound board as a live sound engineer for Suspect's Murder Mystery Dinner Theater in OldTown Sac.

Here is a testimonial from one of Dustin's recent clients, Raining Glass:

Hi, this is Jason Karstens from Raining Glass,

I have worked with Dustin and the Formulation Room for over 4
years now, back when their studio used to be called World 2 because
their industrial size recording space is riddled with drama room props
and draped with colorful iridescent decor, it is like entering another
world.

Everyone in Raining Glass is astonished with The Formulation Rooms
efficiency, their dialed in attention to detail, willingness to
understand the band they are working with, their knowledgeable
insight on optimizing your equipment and best of all the sweet sound
of hearing your music back exactly the way you envisioned it to sound
and better.

The Formulation Room is the place to record. They are professional
minds with professional equipment.

Thank you from all of us in Raining Glass,
Chris De Leon-Vocals
Mikey MacAvoy- Bass
Brain Havrilla- Guitar
Reuben Goffinet- Guitar
Jason Karstens- Drums

--David Marler

David Marler has been a professional freelance recording engineer for over 4 years now. As a lifelong musician David honed his recording and mixing skills while recording his own bands early on. After putting away the guitar David put full focus on his recording skills. Now graduated from the Sacramento City Audio Recording Program, he splits his time between engineering at The Formulation Room and working at Carvin.

Advice: Studio Recording Preparation:

  • Be well rehersed:
knowing your guitar solos, back-up vocals and recording to a click will save you valuable studio time and money
  • The Click
if you plan to record to a click (metranome) you must reherse to one. Figure out your song tempos before hand.
  • Equipment Maintance:
A well tuned drum set with new heads as well as an intonated guitar with new strings can go a long way in making professional sounding recordings.
  • Factor in time for Editing and Mixdown
more time spent editing/mixing = better sounding recordings
